We know that TV and film harness innovative technology with everything that they approach, curating new ways that the end product is delivered to the consumer. Because LED screens are now so readily available, boasting a wide range of walls and content flexibility, they have now become an integral part to TV and film production. Thanks to the advancement of LED technology, these installations, when used in a controlled environment are now being used to replace the ‘green screen’ in a highly immersive ways.

Here are some really cool applications of LED wall in TV, film production, and virtual production stages so far:

LED technology used for live shows

Like any live event, an LED screen is going to enhance visibility, customer engagement and generate a real atmosphere. Just like it would at a concert or festival, LED screens have been used for live outdoor TV shows for many years. Remember Big Brother? Now imagine the show without the use of Outdoor LED and live streaming. When you need high impact audience buy in for live TV, LED forms an important part of delivering your content and scheduled performances. Enabling you to also live stream, interact with participants and display important information because the appearance of your live show is paramount and you dont want anyone to miss a thing. Equally, these screens are just as important for your viewers at home, ensuring high quality, clarity and enjoyment.

LED production sets

LED video walls are slowly replacing green screen technology, and when the green screen just won’t cut it, the LED wall will be used to create an enhanced environment for the creators and actors.

This supports logistical challenges for filming locations because it means that the technology can be used to simulate a place or a mode of transport, thus potentially reducing costs associated with location shoots. The special effects department will then pair your enhanced environment with motion and sound. Next time you watch a film and someone is on the train, you might just question how this is done! And realise how incredible it looks when it is put together.

Virtual effects with real-time LED screen backgrounds

Did you know that LED backdrop technology was used to support filming for The Mandalorian? The high quality of these screens delivered an epic show with truly high impact. Visual Effects company founded by George Lucas created the ‘Stage Craft’ system; a 20ft high, 75ft wide semi circle of LED video walls. They took it to the next level by combining a virtual environment with the live action. The virtual world content was played on the screens whilst actors performed in front of it using their props and scripted act, the curved screen presented the immersive space and could be adjusted in real time.

Realistic illusions

Have you ever wondered how some silver screen productions make outer space look so realistic? The ability to create a completely immersive experience, for the actors and the audience is known as ‘realistic illusions’ and 3D LED environments have pioneered this capability. In previous filming, light boxes have been built from LED panels and then actors are placed inside. Visual effects technicians and professionals will then programme the LED to display whatever it is that they need to simulate. Next time you see someone spinning through ‘space’ in a blockbuster movie, you will now know just how this was achieved. Cinematography at its finest.

LED technology for TV and film is just beginning and we’re in awe of the creations that have been made and it gives us some pretty inspiring things to think about. Today, filmmakers and TV production pros are using LED walls and screens as a permanent fixture in their production studio, just like Pinewood Studios for example.
